Visual Arts Programs for Elders at Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center

In March we’re launching a series of monthly arts engagement programs at the Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center, geared specifically toward elders.

The series features a tour of one of the museum exhibits, followed by an art-making session.  In March, local artist/arts teacher Michele Barnes will delve into printmaking, following a mini-tour of the museum’s print-making exhibit.

Art-making is something everyone can engage in, and artists will tell you the process is far more important than the product.  We encourage community-dwelling elders, dependent elders and their caregivers and people in assisted living communities to take advantage of these creative engagement, stimulating, socialization opportunities.   A June 2016 Virginian Pilot article has more on the benefits of arts engagement by elders and particularly for those living with dementia.

The events are at 2 – 3:30 pm on Wednesdays: March 14, April 11, May 16 and June 13.  A nominal fee of $3 helps defray costs.  Participants are asked to reserve a spot by calling the Center, 757-393-8543.
