  • Artist/Caregiver Workshop: Modern Art Techniques Elizabeth Lokon (Scripps Gerontology, OH)

    Description:

    Elizabeth “Like” Lokon, MGS, Ph.D. is the founder and director of Opening Minds through Art (OMA), a Scripps intergenerational art program for people with dementia based at Miami University in Ohio. OMA has been replicated in over 50 locations throughout North America and will be replicated at an additional 100 sites throughout the state of Ohio. As an artist, gerontologist, and educator, she frequently speaks on the intersection of the arts, dementia, and intergenerational service learning and has published in these areas. She has presented her work in North America, Europe and Asia. She is a fiber artist and is also a Master Teaching Artist with the National Center for Creative Aging.
    Person- Centered Principles and Modern Art Techniques for Elders with Dementia
    Person-centered Principles and Modern Art Techniques for Elders with Dementia will demonstrate how to use visual art as a tool for communication for those with memory loss and how person-centered care principles can be applied to tap the creativity of people living with dementia.

    PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN:

    · Person-centered principles to promote creativity and social engagement in people with dementia through hands-on modern art experiences.
    · Engage in art-making that is fun and failure-free for people who have dementia.
    · Practice communication strategies when using modern art techniques.
    · Find out about free, online resources from the National Center for Creative Aging (NCCA).
